What to Do If an Industrial Chiller Freezes: Correct Handling and Safety Guide

Learn what to do when an industrial chiller freezes. This guide explains safe thawing methods, inspection steps, and how to prevent damage to chiller components.

Industrial chillers may freeze unexpectedly, especially in cold environments or when operating conditions are not properly adjusted. Incorrect handling after freezing can cause serious damage to internal components such as pumps, heat exchangers, and pipelines. The following guidance, based on professional engineering practices, explains the correct and safe way to deal with a frozen industrial chiller.

1. Power Off the Chiller Immediately
Once freezing is detected, shut down the chiller at once. This step is critical to prevent mechanical damage caused by ice blockage, abnormal pressure buildup, or dry running of the water pump. Continuing operation while frozen can significantly shorten the service life of the chiller.

2. Thaw Gradually Using Warm Water (Recommended Method)
Add warm water at approximately 40°C (104°F) into the water tank to allow the internal temperature to rise slowly and help the ice melt evenly.
Avoid using boiling or excessively hot water. Sudden temperature changes may result in thermal shock, potentially leading to cracks or deformation of internal components.

3. Equalize External Temperature Gently
To assist the thawing process, a hot air blower or space heater can be used to gently warm the exterior of the chiller. Focus on areas around the water tank and pump sections, typically located behind the side panels.
Maintain a safe distance and avoid concentrated or prolonged heating on one spot. Gradual temperature equalization between the external structure and internal water circuit helps ensure safe and uniform ice melting.

4. Inspect the Chiller System After Thawing
Once all ice has completely melted, carry out a thorough inspection before restarting the unit:
* Check the water tank and piping for cracks or leaks
* Confirm that normal water flow has been fully restored
* Verify that the temperature control system and sensors are functioning correctly
After confirming there are no abnormalities, restart the chiller and monitor its operation to ensure stable and reliable performance.
