CO2 laser application in wood cutting

There are basically two ways of wood laser cutting - instant gasification and burning. It depends on the power density of the wood absorbs during laser cutting.

When it comes to wood cutting, we often think of the traditional saws in various forms. However, using saw to cut wood will generate huge amount of saw dust and noise, which is not friendly to the environment. Therefore, people want to search for a new way for wood cutting. Luckily, laser cutting technique was invented and it greatly solves the noise problem and the saw dust problem. Besides, laser cutting technique can produce better cut surface, comparing with traditional cutting. On the cut surface of the wood, the roughness and ripping is not clear. Instead, it is covered with a very thin carbonized layer.

There are basically two ways of wood laser cutting - instant gasification and burning. It depends on the power density of the wood absorbs during laser cutting.

Instant gasification is an ideal way of wood cutting. It means that the wood will gasify when it is under focused laser light and then the gasification part will become a cut line. This kind of wood laser cutting features high cutting speed, no carbonization on the cut surface and only slight darkening and glazing.

As for burning, it features low cutting speed, wider cut line and bigger cutting thickness. There will be smoke and burning smell during operation.

So what kind of laser source is ideal for wood laser cutting?

The common laser source for wood laser cutter would be CO2 laser. It features 10.64μm wavelength, making its laser light easy to be absorbed by various kinds of non-metal materials, such as wood, fabric, leather, paper, textile, acrylic and so on.

Like other kinds of laser sources, CO2 laser tends to generate a great amount of heat in the running. Excessive temperatures of it needs to be brought down. Otherwise, the CO2 laser is likely to crack, increasing unnecessary maintenance cost.

S&A Teyu portable chiller unit CW-5000 is the ideal cooling partner for the wood laser cutter users. It creates ease in chilling the CO2 laser cutter and doesn’t disrupt your current system, thanks to the fact that it has a compact design. Small as it is, CW5000 chiller can deliver up to ±0.3℃ temperature stability together with 800W cooling capacity. For users with dual frequency demand, CW5000 chiller also provides a dual frequency version - CW-5000T which is compatible in both 220V 50HZ and 220V 60HZ.
