The application and development of UV laser and ultrafast laser

Laser source is the key part of all the laser systems. It has many different categories. For example, far infrared laser, visible laser, X-ray laser, UV laser, ultrafast laser, etc.. And today, we mainly focus on ultrafast laser and UV laser.

The development of ultrafast laser

As laser technology continues to develop, ultrafast laser was invented. It features unique ultra-short pulse and can achieve very high peak light intensity with relative low pulse power. Different from traditional pulse laser and continuous wave laser, ultrafast laser has ultra-short laser pulse, leading to relatively big spectrum width. It can solve the problems that traditional methods are hard to solve and has the amazing processing ability, quality and efficiency. It is gradually attracting the eyes of the laser system manufacturers.

Ultrafast laser is mainly used for precision processing

Ultrafast laser can achieve clean cutting and won’t damage the surroundings of the cut area to form rough edges. Therefore, it is very advantageous in processing glass, sapphire, heat-sensitive materials, polymer and so on. Besides, it also plays an important role in the surgeries that require ultra-high precision.

The continuous update of laser technology has already made ultrafast laser “stepped out” from the laboratory and entered into industrial and medical sectors. The success of ultrafast laser relies on its ability to focus the light energy within picosecond or femtosecond level in very tiny area.

In industrial sector, ultrafast laser is also suitable for processing metal, semiconductor, glass, crystal, ceramics and so on. For brittle materials like glass and ceramics, their processing requires very high precision and accuracy. And ultrafast laser can perfectly do that. In medical sector, many hospitals can now perform cornea surgery, heart surgery and other demanding surgeries.

UV laser is very ideal for scientific research, industry and OEM system integrated development

The major application of UV laser include scientific research and industrial manufacturing equipment. Meanwhile, it is widely used for chemical technology and medical equipment and sterilizing equipment that requires ultraviolet light radiation. DPSS UV laser based on Nd:YAG/Nd:YVO4 crystal is the best choice for micromachining, so it has a wide application in processing PCB and consumer electronics.

UV laser features ultra-short wavelength & pulse width and low M2, so it can create a more focused laser light spot and keep the smallest heat affecting zone in order to achieve more precise micro-machining in relatively small space. Absorbing the high energy from the UV laser, material can vaporize very quickly. So the carbonization can reduce.

The output wavelength of UV laser is below 0.4μm, which makes UV laser the ideal choice for processing polymer. Different from infrared light processing, UV laser micro-machining is not heat treatment. Besides, most of the materials can absorb UV light more easily than infrared light. So is polymer.

The development of domestic UV laser

In addition to the fact that foreign brands like Trumpf, Coherent and Inno dominate the high-end market, domestic UV laser manufacturers are also experiencing encouraging growth. Domestic brands like Huaray, RFH and Inngu are getting higher and higher sales per year.

No matter whether it is ultrafast laser or UV laser, they both share one thing in common - high precision. It is this high precision that makes these two kinds of lasers becoming so popular in the demanding industry. However, they are very sensitive to thermal changes. A small temperature fluctuation would cause a huge difference in the processing performance. A precise laser cooler would be a wise decision.

S&A Teyu CWUL series and CWUP laser coolers are specifically designed for cooling UV laser and ultrafast laser respectively. Their temperature stability can be up to ±0.2℃ and ±0.1℃. This kind of high stability can keep the UV laser and the ultrafast laser at a very stable temperature range. You no longer have to worry that the thermal change would affect the performance of the laser.
