Two laser techniques can be used in lithium battery production 1

Lithium battery is now everywhere in our daily life. From smart phone to new energy vehicles, it has become the major power source for them. And in the production of lithium battery, there are two kinds of laser techniques that are widely used.

Laser welding

The production of lithium battery involves a pole piece welding procedure which requires welding the battery pole piece and the current collector piece together. The anode material requires welding the aluminum sheet and the aluminum foil. And the cathode material requires welding the copper foil and the nickle sheet. Suitable and optimized welding technique plays an important role in saving the production cost for lithium battery and maintaining its reliability. Traditional welding is ultrasonic welding which is easy to cause insufficient welding. What's more, its welding head is easy to wear down and its wearing time is uncertain. Therefore, it is likely to lead to low yield.

However, with UV laser welding technique, the outcome would be totally different. Since the lithium battery materials have higher absorption rate to UV laser light, the difficulty of welding is pretty low. Besides, the heat affecting zone is pretty small, making UV laser welding machine the most effective welding technique in lithium battery production.

Laser marking

The lithium battery production involves many other procedures, including raw material information, production process and technique, production batch, manufacturer, production date and so on. How to track the whole production? Well, it requires storing these key information in a QR code. Traditional printing technique has the disadvantage of the marking being easy to fade away during transportation. But with UV laser marking machine, the QR code can be long lasting, no matter what the situation is. Because the marking is long lasting, it can serve the purpose of anti-counterfeiting.

The above mentioned laser techniques used in lithium battery production have one thing in common -- they all use UV laser as the laser source. UV laser has the wavelength of 355nm and is known for cold processing. That means it won't damage the battery material during the welding or marking process. However, UV laser is quite sensitive to thermal changes and if it is under dramatic temperature fluctuation, its laser output will be affected. Therefore, to maintain the laser output of the UV laser, the most effective way is to add an industrial water chiller. S&A Teyu CWUL-05 air cooled water chiller is ideal for cooling 3W-5W UV laser. This industrial water chiller is characterized by ±0.2℃ temperature stability and properly designed pipeline. This means that bubble is less likely to occur, which can reduce the impact to the laser source. Besides, CWUL-05 air cooled water chiller comes with an intelligent temperature controller so that water temperature can changes as the ambient temperature changes, reducing the possibility of condensed water.
